Aboriginal Children Are Being Discriminated Against!

In 1991, Canada Ratified the United Nation's Conventions on the Right of the Child, and now the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada and Kairos are demanding that Canada holds their promise to children, a promise that includes that all children must receive a proper education, health care and standard of living. The society has submitted a report to the UN stating that "First Nations children on reserves receive less money for heath, welfare services and education" and that the UN should hold the federal government of Canada accountable for breaking their commitment to the Convention of the Rights of the Child. I personally think that the Canadian Government's  discrimination against First Nation children is disgusting, saddening and quite frankly, embarrassing!
Stephen Harper listens as National Chief of the
Assembly of First Nation's Phil Fontaine
speaks about Aboriginal School conditions.
Discrimination against First Nation children is a current problem facing all of Canada and is demonstrated by the fact that many of their schools are infested with mice and mold, and they lack heat, running water and basic supplies. In addition, many children are forced to leave home if they wish to attend high school, since many reserves do not have one, causing many children to drop out of school.

So what is happening to deal with this event? The Assembly of First Nations and the federal government launched a national panel on education to produce a report with recommendations of how to improve the system. I do not think this is enough! It does not make sense that in a country like Canada that any children should STILL be living in conditions comparable to those in developing countries! Words, or in this case panels, are meaningless if actions do not follow them! Aboriginal groups hope that the United Nations will draw international attention to Canada's treatment of First Nations people, and in my opinion, EMBARRASS Canada into stopping its discrimination against Aboriginal children.
